Introduction
Music was a central component of some of the most important and effective
American progressive movements of the past two centuries. From the Abolition Movement of the early 1800s to the labor activism of the 1920s to the Civil Rights marches of the 1950s and 1960s to the massive protests against the Vietnam War, singing (and songwriting) consistently played an invaluable role in educating, inspiring, uniting, re-invigorating, and conveying people’s struggles for a more equal, free, just, and peaceful world.
The inclusion of music in these movements was never a dependent consequence of members’ pre-existing talents or interests; rather, many of these efforts actively trained their participants (of all levels of ability) in group singing and cultivated a shared repertoire of protest music.

The Apple Song (That’s How I Made My Millions)
by Bernard Gilbert
Well, I bought me an apple for two cents
Polished it and sold it for four
I went back to the apple store with my four cents,
And used ’em to buy two more
Chorus: And that’s how I made my millions
John Doe is my name
I had nothing; now I’ve got millions –
Anyone can do the same!
I sold my two apples for eight cents
Used the money to buy four more
Those four brought in fifteen cents,
Which I took right back to the apple store (Chorus)
So the next time, I got eight
Polished them and sold them all
I was makin’ money at a mighty rate,
Thinkin’ big, though I started small (Chorus)
By this time I had thirty-two cents,
And turned it into sixty-four
None of this here money I spent,
On things I ate or wore (Chorus)
I bought thirty-two apples and sold ’em with pride
I really wasn’t doin’ too bad
And then my wealthy grandpa died,
And he left me everything he had . . . (Chorus)
As One by Billy Preston
(If “I know we can” has the word “can” italicized, take it to the high octave; otherwise, keep it level)
Understand . . . be understood . . . always stand . . . up for the good
I know we can . . . we all should live, as one
Take no more . . . than what you give . . . al – ways stay . . . on positive
I know we can . . . we all should live, as one
If humanity, lived in dignity
What a better place, this whole world would be
We can find our way, to that brighter day, as one
See yourself . . . in others’ shoes . . . we don’t have . . . much time to lose
But I know we can . . . we all should live, as one
Let your song . . . of peace resound . . . shine your light . . . all around
I know we can . . . we all should live, as one
If humanity, lived in dignity
What a better place, this whole world would be
We can find our way, to that brighter day, as one

Alto: I know we can . . . I know we can do it . . .

Continue until music builds up to indicate return to bridge

Understand . . . be understood . . . always stand . . . up for the good
I know we can . . . we all should live, as one!
Banks of Marble
by Les Rice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-o3CJytIPE
I’ve traveled round this country . . . from shore to shining shore
It really made me wonder . . . the things I heard and saw
I saw the weary farmer . . . plowing sod and loam
I heard the auction hammer . . . a-knocking down his home.
But the banks are made of marble . . . with a guard at every door,
And the vaults are stuffed with silver . . . that the farmer sweated for
I saw the seaman standing . . . idly by the shore
I heard the bosses saying . . . “Got no work for you no more.”
But the banks are made of marble . . . with a guard at every door
And the vaults are stuffed with silver . . . that the seaman sweated for
I saw the weary miner . . . scrubbing coal dust from his back
I heard his children cryin’ . . . got no coal to heat the shack
But the banks are made of marble . . . with a guard at every door
And the vaults are stuffed with silver . . . that the miner sweated for
I’ve seen men and women working . . . throughout this mighty land
I pray we’ll get together . . . and together make a stand
Then we’d own those banks of marble . . . with a guard at every door
And we’d share those vaults of silver . . . that we have sweated for
BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld6fAO4idaI
How many roads must a man walk down,
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail,
Before she sleeps in the sand?
How many times must the cannon balls fly,
Before they’re forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
How many years can a mountain exist,
Before it’s washed to the sea?
How many years can some people exist,
Before they’re allowed to be free?
How many times can a man turn his head,
And pretend that he just doesn’t see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind,
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
How many times must a man look up,
Before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have,
Before he can hear people cry?
How many deaths will it take till he knows,
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
Can’t Keep Me Quiet Original by Bernard Gilbert; added verses by Reed Fromer
https://vimeo.com/album/4768075/video/244285977 at 1 hour 15 min 30 sec
Chorus: Well, you can’t keep me quiet, I know too much about it,
You can’t keep me quiet, I know too much about it,
You can’t keep me quiet, I know too much about it . . .
I’m gonna tell what I know!
There’s a little white man in a big White House,
Thinks the truth is a light . . . and he can put it out
He’s ready to corner the market on lies
But he ain’t gonna pull the wool, over my eyes, I said you – (Chorus)
You say that this nation . . . can only be strong
By tellin’ some someone . . . that they don’t belong
Turnin’ neighbor on neighbor . . . and friend against friend
We’ve been there, and done that, and never again . . . no you – (Chorus)
You say there’s a limit . . . to what we should know
And to what we can say, and to where we can go
You’d like to make it illegal . . . to give you the blues
If you think we’re gonna take it, better turn on the news, ’cause you – (Chorus)
We’ll be talkin’ online . . . we’ll be out in the street,
To say that losin’ one battle . . . don’t mean we’ve been beat
So out of the shadows . . . and into the sun,
You think it’s loud now, we ain’t even begun . . . no you – (Chorus)
Carry It On
by Gil Turner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ1AE4lgYSk
There’s a man by my side walking
There’s a voice, within me talking
There’s a voice, within me saying
Carry on, carry it on
They will tell, their empty stories
Send their dogs, to bite our bodies
They will lock, us up in prison
Carry on, carry it on
When you can’t go, on any longer
Take the hand, hand of your brother
Every victory brings another
Carry it on, carry it on
Carry on, carry it on

CHORUS
All of us are members . . . all of us are members . . .
All of us are members of the family.
And we bid you to remember . . . as you . . . carry out your plan
All of us are members of the family of (Bomp bomp!) woman and man!
Some of us were born near the North and South pole,
Where the low temperatures are mean
Some appeared in more moderate zones,
Somewhere in between
But wherever you happened to squeeze out . . .
Whatever the name of that land,
All of us are members of the family of (Bomp bomp!) Woman and man!
CHORUS
All of us are members . . . all of us are members . . .
All of us are members of the family.
And we bid you to remember . . . as you . . . carry out your plan
All of us are members of the family of (Bomp bomp!) woman and man!
Some are the color of peaches and cream,
Some of pumpkin pie
Some are the color of banana nut bread,
And some of Russian rye
But whatever color you happen to be, it’s plain as the back of your hand,
All of us are members of the family of (Bomp bomp!) Woman and man!
CHORUS
All of us are members . . . all of us are members . . .
All of us are members of the family.
And we bid you to remember . . . as you . . . carry out your plan
All of us are members of the family of (Bomp bomp!) woman and man!
Some of us are shaped like cucumbers, Some are shaped like pears,
Some are smooth, like dolphins and eels,
And some are hairy like bears.
But whatever your shape or texture . . . whatever your cosmetic plan,
All of us are members of the family of (Bomp bomp!) Woman and man!
CHORUS
All of us are members . . . all of us are members . . .
All of us are members of the family.
And we bid you to remember . . . as you . . . carry out your plan
All of us are members of the family of (Bomp bomp!) woman and man!
Some take lovers of the opposite sex
Some prefer their own kind
Some say variety’s the spice of life,
And some can’t make up their mind
But whatever your orientation . . . whatever your libido demands
Now there are those among us . . .
Who are dangerous, that’s for sure
To protect their privileges, they would drag us into war
But the family will rise above them
And strip them of their power
And guarantee the future . . . against that midnight hour!
CHORUS
All of us are members . . . all of us are members . . .
All of us are members of the family.
And we bid you to remember . . . as you . . . carry out your plan
All of us are members of the family of (Bomp bomp!) woman and man
For What It’s Worth
by Stephen Stills at 1 hour 13 min https://vimeo.com/album/4768075/video/244285977
There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me . . . I got to beware
It’s time to STOP! Children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down!
Battle lines been drawn
Nobody’s right… if everybody’s wrong
Young people speakin’ their minds
Getting so much resistance . . . from behind,
It’s time to STOP! Children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down!
What a field day for the heat
A thou-sand people in the street
Singing songs… and carrying signs
What they’re sayin’, “Hooray for our side”
It’s time to STOP! Children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down!
Paranoia strikes deep
In – to – your – life – it - will – creep
Starts when you’re always afraid
Step out of line… th’ man comes… and takes you away
It’s time to STOP! Children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down!
STOP! Children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down!
STOP! Children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look - what’s going dowwwwwwwn!
Get Together https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53XyCbIJGKY
Love is but a song to sing . . . fear’s the way we die
You can make the mountains ring . . . or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing . . . and you may not know why
CHORUS: Come on, people now,
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together,
Try to love one another, right now
Some may come and some may go . . . we shall surely pass
When the one that left us here . . . returns for us at last
We are but a moment’s sunlight . . . fading in the grass
CHORUS
If you hear the song I sing . . . you will understand (listen!)
You hold the key to love and fear . . . all in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both . . . it’s there at your command
CHORUS
Gonna Take Us All
by Jon Fromer https://www.google.com/search?q=youtube+gonna+take+us+all+jon+fromer&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari
We need the Buddhists and the Baptists
The Quakers and Catholics, too
The atheists and agnostics
The Muslims and the Jews
We need people of all nations
All colors and all creeds To put an end to war, now And put an end to greed
Chorus: Gonna take us all, to make a change
Take us all, to win the peace
Gonna take us all in the streets
Gonna take us all . . . . . . . . . Gonna take us all
We need the immigrants and the unions
The Greens and the gays
The hip-hoppers and . . . be-boppers, And Women for Equal Pay
Farm workers out in the sun, The homeless out in the rain
The seniors and the soccer moms
For a world that is humane Chorus
We need your friends and your neighbors
The poets and the painters Socialists and the anarchists Pacifists and the humanists Every culture and community,
It takes black and white and brown
Sometimes we won’t see eye to eye,
But we stand on common ground Chorus
Have You Been to Jail for Justice
by Anne Feeney https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuwsjKvOIoQ
Was it Cesar Chavez? Or maybe Dorothy Day?
Some say Dr. King or Gandhi set them on their way
No matter who your mentors are, it’s pretty plain to see
If you’ve been to jail for justice . . . you’re in good company
CHORUS:
Have you been to jail for justice? I wanna shake your hand
Sitting in and lying down are ways to take a stand
Have you sung a song for freedom? Or marched that picket line?
Have you been to jail for justice? Then you’re a friend of mine!
You law abiding citizens, come listen to this song
Laws were made by people . . . and people can be wrong
Once unions were against the law, but slavery was fine
Women were denied the vote, and children worked the mine
The more you study history, the less you can deny it
A rotten law stays on the books ’til folks with guts defy it!
CHORUS
The law’s supposed to serve us, and so are the police
And when the system fails, it’s up to us to speak our peace
It takes eternal vigilance, for justice to prevail
So get courage from your convictions – let them haul you off to jail!
CHORUS
I Cannot Sleep
by Malvina Reynolds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fQiOEYPutk
I cannot sleep, for thinking of the children
Who cannot sleep, gone supperless to bed.
I cannot sleep, for thinking of the young ones
Who roam the roads, no place to lay their head.
Chorus: If there were one, it would be cause to wonder,
If there were one, it would be cause to weep,
But they are numbered into many thousands,
And for each one, I cannot sleep.
The stores are full, the bins are overflowing,
In sight of food, the hungry children wait,
While on the street, the lines are gettin’ longer
Because at home, there’s nothing on their plate.
Chorus
We will not sleep, my sisters from the city,
We will not sleep, my brothers from the plow,
’Til we have shared, the wealth we have created
And there is food, for those who hunger now.
Chorus
’Til there are none . . . we will not sleep
If I Had a Hammer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxWTDcP9Y5E

I’d hammer in the evening . . . all over this land
I’d hammer out danger . . . I’d hammer out a warning
I’d hammer out love between, my brothers and my sisters,
All, over this land!
If I had a bell . . . I’d ring it in the morning
I’d ring it in the evening . . . all over this land
I’d ring out danger . . . I’d ring out a warning
I’d ring out love between, my brothers and my sisters,
All, over this land!
If I had a song . . . I’d sing it in the morning
I’d sing it in the evening . . . all over this land
I’d sing out danger . . . I’d sing out a warning
I’d sing out love between, my brothers and my sisters
All, over this land, oh
Well, I’ve got a hammer . . . and I’ve got a bell
And I’ve got a song – to – sing, all over this land
It’s the hammer of justice . . . it’s the bell of free-ee-dom
It’s the song about love between, my brothers and my sisters
It’s the hammer of justice . . . it’s the bell of free-ee-dom
It’s the song about love between, my brothers and my sisters
All, over this land!

If You're Lookin’ for Freedom
by Jon Fromer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSUhuYwr_4U
If you’re lookin’ for freedom
You won’t find it alo–o–o–one
But if we walk that road together
Freedom’s gonna light the way home!
If you’re lookin’ for justice
You won’t find it alo–o–o–one
But if we walk that road together
Justice gonna light the way home!
If you’re lookin for peace . . .
You won’t find it alo–o–o–one
But if we walk that road together
Peace gonna light the way home!
If you’re lookin’ for victory . . .
You won’t find it alo–o–o–one
But if we walk that road together
Victory's gonna light the way home!
If . . . you’re . . . still . . . lookin’ for freedom
You won’t find it alo–o–o–one
But if we walk that road together
Freedom’s gonna light . . . freedom’s gonna light . . .

It Could Be a Wonderful World (updated) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k53lbOhtMH4
If we could consider each other
A neighbor, a sister, or brother
It could be a wonderful, wonderful world, It could be a wonderful world . . . oh yes,
It could be a wonderful world
If each little kid could have fresh milk each day
If each homeless soul had a good place to stay
If all of our work left enough time to play
It could be a wonderful world
If we could consider each other
A neighbor, a sister, or brother
It could be a wonderful, wonderful world, It could be a wonderful world . . . oh yes,
It could be a wonderful world
If friendship and peace could be found everywhere,
If each of us knew how to give and to share,
If we could just treat one another with care,
It could be a wonderful world
If we could consider each other
A neighbor, a sister, or brother I
t could be a wonderful, wonderful world,
It could be a wonderful world . . . oh yes,
It could be a wonderful world
It Isn’t Nice
by Malvina Reynolds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvC4xq32AX8
It isn’t nice to block the doorway,
It isn’t nice to go to jail,
There are nicer ways to do it,
But the nice ways always fail.
It isn’t nice, it isn’t nice,
You told us once, you told us twice,
But if that is Freedom’s price,
We don’t mind.
It isn’t nice to carry banners
Or to sit in on the floor,
Or to shout our cry of Freedom
At the hotel and the store.
It isn’t nice, it isn’t nice,
You told us once, you told us twice,
But if that is Freedom’s price,
We don’t mind.
We have tried negotiations
And the three-man picket line,1
Mr. Charlie2 didn’t see us
And he might as well be blind.
Now our new ways aren’t nice
When we deal with men of ice,
But if that is Freedom’s price,
We don’t mind.
How about those years of lynchings
And the shot in Evers’ back?
Did you say it wasn’t proper,
Did you stand upon the track?
You were quiet just like mice,
Now you say we aren’t nice,
And if that is Freedom’s price,
We don’t mind.
It isn’t nice to block the doorway,
It isn’t nice to go to jail,
There are nicer ways to do it
But the nice ways always fail.
It isn’t nice, it isn’t nice,
But thanks for your advice,
Cause if that is Freedom’s price,
We don’t mind.
Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Pf_DntbQ8Y
Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
Full of women and men
And the paper they were signing said
They’d never fight again
And when the papers all were signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands end bowed their heeds
And grateful prayers were prayed
And the people in the streets below
Were dancing round and round
And guns and swords and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground
Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war

Love Can Build a Bridge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmxJ7OzhCTY
I’d gladly walk across the desert, with no shoes upon my feet
To share with you the last bite . . . of bread I had to eat
I would swim right out to save you . . . in your sea of broken dreams
When all your hopes are sinkin’ . . . let me show you what love means
Love can build a bridge
Between your heart and mine
Love can build a bridge
Don’t you think it’s time?
Don’t you think it’s time?
I would whisper love so loudly, every heart would understand
That love and only love . . . can join the tribes of man
I would give my heart’s desire . . . so, that you might see
The first step is to realize, that it all begins with you and me
Chorus
When we stand together
It’s our finest hour
We can do anything (anything), anything (anything)
Keep believin’ in love’s power!

People Got to Be Free
Felix Cavaliere/Eddie Brigat (additional lyric from Keb Mo’ cover) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYYQx9K6Cb0
All the world over, so easy to see
People everywhere just wanna be free
Listen, people, listen, that’s the way it should be
Peace in the valley, people got to be free
You should see . . . what a beautiful world this would be
If everyone learned, to live together
It seems to me . . . it’s such an easy, easy thing to see
Why can’t we learn, to love one another?
All the world over, so easy to see
People everywhere just wanna be free
I can’t understand it, so simple to me
Peace in the valley, people got to be free
If there’s a man . . . who’s down and needs a helpin’ hand
All it takes, is you, to understand and to see him through
It seems to me . . . we gotta solve it individually
And I’ll do unto you, what you do to me
So let’s shout it from the mountains on down to the sea
No two ways about it, people got to be free
Ask me my opinion, my opinion will be,
It’s a nat’ral situation for us all to be free (Instrumental break)
Oh what a feeling’s just come over me
Enough to move a mountain or to make the blind see
Everybody’s singin’, baby, let’s go see
Peace in the valley, now they wanna be free
There’s a freedom train comin’ . . . comin’ for me and you
Hope it don’t take too long, now . . . ’cause it’s long overdue
All the world over, so easy to see
People everywhere just wanna be free
Listen, people, listen, that’s the way it should be
Peace in the valley, people got to be free
Ohhhh, they got to be free!
Pollution
by Tom Lehrer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGFbS_jdSl0
If you visit American city,
You will find it very pretty.
Just two things of which you must beware:
Don’t drink the water, don’t breathe the air!
Pollution, pollution,
They got smog and sewage and mud.
Turn on your tap
And get hot and cold running crud.
See the halibuts and the sturgeons
Being wiped out by detergents.
Fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly,
But they don’t last long if they try.
Pollution, pollution,
You can use the latest toothpaste,
Then rinse your mouth
With industrial waste.
Just go out for a breath of air,
Then you’re ready for Medicare.
The city streets are really quite a thrill –
If the hoods don’t get you, the monoxide will!
Pollution, pollution,
Wear a gas mask and a veil.
Then you can breathe
Long as you don’t inhale.
Lots of things there that you can drink,
But stay away from the kitchen sink.
The breakfast garbage that you throw into the Bay,
They drink at lunch in San Jose.
So go to the city, see the crazy people there.
Like lambs to the slaughter [musical break]
They’re drinking the water, and brea – thing *cough* the air!
There But For Fortune
by Phil Ochs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JgZgd_xe_Y
Show me a prison, show me a jail
Show me a prisoner whose face has grown pale
And I’ll show you a young man with so many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I . . . you or I
Show me an alley, show me a train
Show me a hobo who sleeps in the rain
And I’ll show you a young man with so many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I . . . you or I
Show me the famine, show me the frail
Eyes with no future, that show how we fail
And I’ll show you the children with so many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I . . . you or I
Show me the country where bombs had to fall
Show me the ruins of buildings once so tall
And I’ll show you a young land with many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I . . . you or I There but for fortune, go you or I . . . you or I
THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
by Woody Guthrie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxiMrvDbq3s
This land is your land . . . this land is my land
From California . . . to the New York island
From the redwood forest . . . to the Gulf Stream wa-a-ters
This land was made for you and me!
As I was walking . . . that ribbon of highway . . .
I saw above me . . . that endless skyway
I saw below me . . . that golden valley . . . this land was made for you and me!
I’ve roamed and rambled . . . and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of . . . her diamond deserts;
And all around me . . . a voice was sounding . . . this land was made for you and me!
When the sun came shining . . . and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving . . . and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting . . . a voice was chanting . . . this land was made for you and me!
Was a big old sign there . . . that tried to stop me
And on the sign, it . . . said “No Trespassing”
But on the other side . . . it didn’t say nothing . . . that side was made for you and me!

Tick Tock
by Stevie Ray Vaughn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU7b65SmZ_s
Narration: One night, while sleeping in my bed, I had a beautiful dream . . . that all the people of the world got together on the same wavelength, and began to help each other . . . . . now in this dream, universal love was the theme of the day . . . . . . peace and understanding . . . and it happened this way:
The sick, and the hungry . . . had smiles on their faces
The poor, and the homeless . . . had family all around
The streets, and the cities . . . were beautiful places
And the walls came tumbling down
People of the world . . . all had it together
Had it together . . . for the boys, and the girls
Children of the world . . . looked forward to the future . . . remember,
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock peo – ple . . . time’s tickin’ away
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock peo – ple . . . time’s tickin’ away
I had a vision, of a blue sky . . . from sea to shinin’ sea
The trees, and the forests . . . stood strong and tall again
Everything was clean and pretty . . . and save for you and me
The worst of enemies . . . became the best of friends
People of the world . . . all had it together
Had it together . . . for the boys, and the girls
Children of the world . . . looked forward to the future . . . remember,
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock peo – ple . . . time’s tickin’ away
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock peo – ple . . . time’s tickin’ away

Wake Up Everybody
by Teddy Pendergrass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyAuATJXc14
Wake up, everybody, no more sleeping in bed
No more backward thinking, time for thinkin’ ahead
The world has changed so very much, from how it used to be
There is so much hatred . . . war and poverty
Wake up, all you teachers; time to teach a new way
Maybe then they’ll listen . . . to what you have to say
They’re the ones still growin’ up; the future’s in their hands
When you teach the children, teach them the very best you can . . .
The world won’t get no better . . . if we just, let it be
The world won’t get no better . . . we gotta change it . . . you & me
Wake up, all you doctors, make the sick people well
They’re the ones who suffer . . . and catch all the hell
They don’t have so very long, before their judgment day
So won’t you give them comfort . . . before they pass away?
’Cause the world –
The world won’t get no better . . . if we just, let it be
The world won’t get no better . . . we gotta change it . . . you & me
Wake up, all you builders, time to build a new land
I know we can do it, if we all lend a hand
Only thing we have to do, is put it in our minds
Surely things can work out . . . it happens all the time
The world won’t get no better . . . if we just, let it be
The world won’t get no better . . . we gotta change it – CHANGE IT!
Change it . . . I said the world –
The world won’t get no better . . . if we just, let it be
The world won’t get no better . . . we gotta change it – CHANGE IT!
Change it . . . just you & me

What Did You Learn In School Today?
by Tom Paxton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHI5NIlD6aU
What did you learn in school today, dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today, dear little boy of mine?
I learned that Washington never told a lie,
I learned that soldiers seldom die,
I learned that everybody’s free,
And that’s what the teacher said to me,
And that’s what I learned in school today, that’s what I learned in school
What did you learn in school today, dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today, dear little boy of mine?
I learned that policemen are my friends, I learned that justice never ends,
I learned that murderers pay for their crimes,
Even if we make a mistake sometimes,
And that’s what I learned in school today, that’s what I learned in school
What did you learn in school today, dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today, dear little boy of mine?
I learned that war is not so bad,
I learned about the great ones that we had.
We fought in Germany and in France
And some day I might get my chance.
And that’s what I learned in school today, that’s what I learned in school
What did you learn in school today, dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today, dear little boy of mine?
I learned our government must be strong;
It’s always right and never wrong!
Our leaders are the finest men
And we elect them again and again,
And that’s what I learned in school today, that’s what I learned in school

Zipper Songs
The songs that follow are duplicates of some of those already included in the alphabetical section of this book. We’ve grouped them in this section so that they can be easily accessed for singing at marches and rallies. They form a subgenre of protest music known as “zipper songs.”
Rather than the conventional verse-chorus format, a zipper song generally consists of the same verse pattern sung repeatedly, with only one key word or phrase varying from one verse to the next.
This style offers several benefits to the function of protest music. The repetitive arrangement makes the songs easy to pick up; by the end of a verse or two, even first- time participants can catch the pattern and join in confidently. They’re also the most adaptable of songs; the reliability of the verse form frees the singers up to tailor the variable portion to whatever the struggle of the moment happens to be. Many of these songs have been employed with equal comfort by civil rights, labor, and antiwar movements.

Bitter Wind, Angry Rain by Jon Fromer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3hnAkoJJro
Wind don’t blow like it used to blow
Fish don’t run down stream anymore
Summer fires coming close to the home
And I’ve never seen a rain like this before
It’s a burning sun
It’s a rising sea
Poison in the water and the air we breathe
It’s a dry river
It’s a raging flame
It’s a bitter wind and an angry rain
Ooh Ooh
The crops are withering in the ground
The trees on the mountain been cut down
Hurricanes are stronger, the summer is getting longer
For my children’s child I hope we turn it around
Cause it’s a burning sun, it’s a rising sea
Poison in the water and the air we breathe
It’s a dry river, it’s a raging flame
It’s a bitter wind and an angry rain
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
It’s a bitter wind and an angry rain
Somos El Barco
Peter Paul & Mary Singing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScSj2GTwflI
words & music by Lorre Wyatt Album: Mail Myself To You [1988]
The stream sings it to the river
The river sings it to the sea
The sea sings it to the boat
That carries you and me
Somos el barco, somos el mar
Yo navego en ti, tú navegas en mí
We are the boat, we are the sea
I sail in you, you sail in me
Now, the boat we are sailing in
Was built by many hands
The sea we are sailing on
It touches every sand
Somos el barco, somos el mar
Yo navego en ti, tú navegas en mí
We are the boat, we are the sea
I sail in you, you sail in me
So with our hopes we raise the sails
To face the wind once more
And with our hearts we chart the waters
Never sailed before
Somos el barco, somos el mar
Yo navego en ti, tú navegas en mí
We are the boat, we are the sea
I sail in you, you sail in me..
Building Bridges

Building bridges building bridges is ohso much better than building a wall.
Building bridges, building bridges that cross over racism, hatred and all.
Building bridges, building bridges of hope so we can stand tall.
And for all you bridge makers, brave-hearted risk takers.
Come forward and answer the call.
And for all you bridge makers, brave-hearted risk takers,
Come forward and answer the call.

Quiri, quiri, quiri, quiri, quiri
La gallina,
La gallina con el
Cara, cara, cara, cara, cara
Los polluelos,
Los polluelos con el
Pio, pio, pio, pio, pi
Y por eso los grandes amores De muchos colores me gustan a mi (2Xs)

In Colors
In colors,
In colors the fields are dressed
In the springtime
In colors,
Colorful are the little birds
That come from far away1
In colors,
Colorful is the rainbow
That we see shine
And that is why the great loves
of many colors are pleasing to me (3Xs)
Sings the rooster,
Sings the rooster with the
Cock-a-doodle-do, cock-a-doodle do...
The hen,
The hen with the
Cluck, cluck, cluck, cluck, cluck...
The baby chicks,
The baby chicks with the
Peep, peep, peep, peep...
And that is why the great loves
of many colors are pleasing to me (3Xs)

I am Woman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu4xpDuf84A
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'Cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again
Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman
You can bend but never break me
'Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul
Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman
I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand
Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can face anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible

We need to wake up
We need to wise up
We need to open our eyes
And do it now now now
We need to build a better future
And we need to start right now
We’re on a planet
That has a problem
We’ve got to solve it, get involved
And do it now now now
We need to build a better future
And we need to start right now
Make it greener
Make it cleaner
Make it last, make it fast
And do it now now now
We need to build a better future
And we need to start right now
No point in waiting
Or hesitating
We must get wise, take no more lies
And do it now now now
We need to build a better future
And we need to start right now

I Cannot Sleep
Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1958 Schroder Music Company, renewed 1996. a.k.a. "I Cannot Sleep for Thinking of the Children." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNR2o2DPCrA
I cannot sleep for thinking of the children
Who cannot sleep, gone supperless to bed.
I cannot sleep for thinking of the young lads
Who roam the roads, no place to lay their head.
If there were one, it would be cause to wonder,
If there were one, it would be cause to weep,
But they are numbered into many thousands,
And for each one, I cannot sleep.
The stores are full, the bins are overflowing,
In sight of food, the hungry children wait,
And on the roads, the boys begin to wander,
Because at home, there's nothing on the plate.
If there were one, it would be cause to wonder,
If there were one, it would be cause to weep,
But they are numbered into many thousands,
And for each one, I cannot sleep.
We will not sleep, my sister on the mill line,
We will not sleep, my brother from the plow,
Until we've stored the wealth we have created
Within the lives of those who hunger now.
If there were one, it would be cause to wonder,
If there were one, it would be cause to weep,
But they are numbered into many thousands, Till there are none, we will not sleep.

Chorus
Thousands walked to work in the morning light
Thousands walked home through the rain at night
Every day for a week, every week for a month
It took more than a year before it was done
Chorus
If you had been there, you could have heard people say
"I always hoped my kids would see a better day"
Lately I must say I've changed my mind
I want to see freedom in my time

I woke up this mornin' with my mind, set on freedom
I woke up this mornin' with my mind, set on freedom
Hallelu, hallelu, hallelu, hallelu
I woke up this mornin' with my mind on freedom, hallelu
I'm singing - oh freedom, oh freedom, (oh freedom now)
Oh freedom over me
And before I'll be a slave
I'll be buried in my grave
And I'll go home to my Lord and I'll be free
This train, she's bound for Glory, this train
This train, she's bound for Glory, this train
This train, she's bound for Glory
This train, she's bound for Glory
Don't carry nobody but the righteous and the holy
This train she's bound for glory, this train
I'm singin'
Oh, what a beautiful city
Oh, what a beautiful city
God knows, it's a beautiful city
Twelve gates to the city
Hallelujah
Gonna lay down my sword and shield
Down by the riverside
Down by the riverside

Down by the riverside
Gonna lay down my sword and shield

For the Love Of It All
Peter, Paul and Mary Music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBWJwQ8Nvco
Guitar Chords http://www.peterpaulandmary.com/music/chords/ftloia.htm
In the beginning, as life became form
The oceans heaved, the mountains were cleaved
The firmament stormed
At the center of being, immensely small
Was the master of now, don't ask me how
The Love of it all
And the seasons were many
Creation was new
And there on a tree (deceptively free)
A forbidden fruit
Upon leaving the garden, after the fall
One thing was clear; we chose not to hear
The love of it all
But for the love of it all
I would go anywhere
To the ends of the earth
What is it worth if Love would be there?
Walking the thin line between fear and the call
One learns to bend and finally depend
On the love of it all
"Irresistible targets"
I heard someone say
They were speaking of angels
Who are so courageous day after day
Gunned down on a highway (as we often recall)
I hear a scream; I have a dream
The love of it all
Still the world is in labor
She groans in travail
She cries with the eagle, the dolphin
She sighs in the song of the whale
While the heart of her people
Prays at the wall
A spirit inside is preparing a bride
For the love of it all
For the love of it all
Like the stars and the sun
We are hearts on the rise
Separate eyes with the vision of one
No valley too deep, no mountain too tall
We can turn back the night with merely the light
From the love of it all
And so we are marching to 'to give peace a chance'
Brother and sister as one in this mystery dance
Long ago on a hilltop where now the curious crawl
A man on a cross paid the ultimate cost
For the love of it all
For the Love of it all
We are gathered by grace
We have followed our hearts
To take up our parts
In this time and place.
Hands for the harvest,
Hear the centuries call:
It is still not too late to come celebrate
The Love of it all
"Eli, eli, lemana shabakthani"
The Love of it all

We won't be silent in the shadows
We won't be driven to despair
We'll bring the light wherever we go
Protect the water and air
We are, we are, we are indivisible
We walk along oceans and prairies
We are, we are, we are indivisible
Together our voices will carry
And as we gather, old and young
Growing in numbers day by day
Joining our hands and hearts as one
We stand in unity and say,
"We are, we are, we are indivisible
free to choose who we love, free to marry
We are, we are, we are indivisible
Together our voices will carry
We are, we are, we are indivisible
We walk along oceans and prairies
We are, we are, we are indivisible
Together our voices will carry
Together our voices will carry
Together our voices will carry"
Rise Up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNKu1uNBVkU
You're broken down and tired
Of living life on a merry go round
And you can't find the fighter
But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out
And move mountains
We gonna walk it out
And move mountains
And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
And I'll rise up
High like the waves
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousands times again
For you
For you
For you
For you
When the silence isn't quiet
And it feels like it's getting hard to breathe
And I know you feel like dying
But I promise we'll take the world to its feet
And move mountains
We'll take it to its feet
And move mountains
And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
For you
For you
For you
For you
All we need, all we need is hope
And for that we have each other
And for that we have each other
We will rise
We will rise
We'll rise, oh oh
We'll rise
I'll rise up
Rise like the day
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I will rise a thousands times again
And we'll rise up
Rise like the waves
We'll rise up
In spite of the ache
We'll rise up
And we'll do it a thousands times again
For you oh oh oh oh oh
For you oh oh oh oh oh
For you oh oh oh oh oh
For you

[Intro]
Put on your face
Know your place
Shut up and smile
Don’t spread your legs
I could do that
[Verse 1]
But no one knows me no one ever will
If I don’t say something, if I just lie still
Would I be that monster, scare them all away
If I let them hear what I have to say
[Chorus]
I can’t keep quiet, no oh oh oh oh oh oh
I can’t keep quiet, no oh oh oh oh oh oh
A one woman riot, oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
I can’t keep quiet
For anyone
Anymore
[Verse 2]
Cuz no one knows me no one ever will
If I don’t say something, take that dry blue pill
They may see that monster, they may run away
But I have to do this
[Chorus]
I can’t keep quiet, no oh oh oh oh oh oh
I can’t keep quiet, no oh oh oh oh oh oh
A one woman riot, oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
[Bridge]
Oh I can’t keep quiet
*Let it out Let it out now*
*Let it out now*
There’ll be someone who understands
*Let it out Let it out now*
*Let it out now*
Must be someone who’ll understand
*Let it out Let it out now*
*Let it out now*
There’ll be someone who understands
*Let it out Let it out now*
*Let it out now*
[Chorus]
I can’t keep quiet, no oh oh oh oh oh oh
*Let it out Let it out now*
*Let it out now*
I can’t keep quiet, no oh oh oh oh oh oh
*Let it out Let it out now*
*Let it out now*
I can’t keep quiet

Go Out And Make The News Lyrics And Music By Gary Apppell. July 2016
(Intro)
Who says we’re retiring
And leaving the stage.
Our actions can inspire others,
Get others engaged.
So… We’re…. setting aside our golf clubs,
Laying our bridge cards down,
Occasionally missing a ball game,
What we do can be profound.
(Verse 1)
Instead of watching the news
And exclaiming all our boos,
Let’s get off of our couches,
Before we blow a fuse.
(chorus--variation)
So let’s go out in threes and twos,
Peacefully, and passionately,
Let’s go out and make the news.
(verse 2)
Let’s show that Don of denigration
All the resistence in our nation.
Don’t go backward to what’s tribal,
Or ugliness ensues.
(Chorus)
So let’s go out in threes and twos,
Go out and make the news.
(Verse 3)
Dare to go out and raise Hades.
Never mind its not for ladies.
Like thoughtful Margaret Sanger,
Let’s be useful with our anger.
(Verse 4)
The whole world sees our dirty laundry;
Racist, hurtful, words so mean.
We’ll need lots of agitation,
To get our laundry clean.
(Chorus)
So let’s go out in threes and twos,
Let’s go out and make the news.
(Verse 5)
We asked reps to meet with voters.
Some responded with disdain.
Now we won’t sit on the sidelines.
We’ll end their reign.
(Verse 6)
We’re inspired by Ghandi and Doctor King;
From the mountaintop, oh what views.
Remember that its justice,
That each prophet pursues.
(Chorus)
So let’s go out in threes and twos,
Let’s go out and make the news.
(Verse 7)
Go and inspire the grass roots.
Unmask the corrupt ones-- in cahoots.
Get earnest voters to their booths.
Elect those who share your truths.
(Chorus-variation)
And that’s what we’ll do in three and twos.
That’s how we’ll really make the news.
(Coda)
Our presence will make the news,
Our stories will make the news.
Our voices will make the news.
Our actions will make the news.
There’s no time to sing the blues.
So let’s go out in threes and twos.
Let’s go out and make the news.
We Can't Make It Here
by James McMurtry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8h5VdIe33o
There's a Vietnam Vet with a cardboard sign
Sitting there by the left turn line
The flag on his wheelchair flapping in the breeze
One leg missing and both hands free
No one's paying much mind to him
The V.A. budget's just stretched so thin
And now there's more coming back from the Mideast war
We can't make it here anymore
And that big ol' building was the textile mill
That fed our kids and it paid our bills
But they turned us out and they closed the doors
'Cause we can't make it here anymore
You see those pallets piled up on the loading dock
They're just gonna sit there 'til they rot
?Cause there's nothing to ship, nothing to pack
Just busted concrete and rusted tracks
Empty storefronts around the square
There's a needle in the gutter and glass everywhere
You don't come down here unless you're looking to score
We can't make it here anymore
The bar's still open but man it's slow
The tip jar's light and the register's low
The bartender don't have much to say
The regular crowd gets thinner each day
Some have maxed out all their credit cards
Some are working two jobs and living in cars
Minimum wage won't pay for a roof, won't pay for a drink
If you gotta have proof just try it yourself Mr. C.E.O.
See how far 5.15 an hour will go
Take a part time job at one your stores
I bet you can't make it here anymore
And there's a high school girl with a bourgeois dream
Just like the pictures in the magazine
She found on the floor of the laundromat
A woman with kids can forget all that
If she comes up pregnant what'll she do
Forget the career and forget about school
Can she live on faith? Live on hope?
High on Jesus or hooked on dope
When it's way too late to just say no
You can't make it here anymore
Now I'm stocking shirts in the Wal-Mart store
Just like the ones we made before
'Cept this one came from Singapore
I guess we can't make it here anymore
Should I hate a people for the shade of their skin
Or the shape of their eyes or the shape I'm in
Should I hate 'em for having our jobs today
No I hate the men sent the jobs away
I can see them all now, they haunt my dreams
All lily white and squeaky clean
They've never known want, they'll never know need
Their shit don't stink and their kids won't bleed
Their kids won't bleed in their damn little war
And we can't make it here anymore
Will I work for food, will I die for oil
Will kill for power and to us the spoils
The billionaires get to pay less tax
The working poor get to fall through the cracks
So let 'em eat jellybeans let'em eat cake
Let 'em eat shit, whatever it takes
They can join the Air Force or join the Corps
If they can't make it here anymore
So that's how it is, that's what we got
If the president wants to admit it or not
You can read it in the paper, read it on the wall
Hear it on the wind if you're listening at all
Get out of that limo, look us in the eye
Call us on the cell phone tell us all why
In Dayton Ohio or Portland Maine
Or a cotton gin out on the great high plains
That's done closed down along with the school
And the hospital and the swimming pool
Dust devils dance in the noonday heat
There's rats in the alley and trash in the street
Gang graffiti on a boxcar door
We can't make it here anymore

Love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.
It's just like a magic penny,
Hold it tight and you won't have any.
Lend it, spend it, and you'll have so many
They'll roll all over the floor.
For love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.
Money's dandy and we like to use it, 1
But love is better if you don't refuse it.
It's a treasure and you'll never lose it
Unless you lock up your door.
For love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.
So let's go dancing till the break of day,
And if there's a piper, we can pay.
For love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.
For love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.
Garden Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHhRyjwYnX0
Inch by inch, row by row, I'm gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below 'til the rain comes tumbling down
Pullin' weeds and pickin' stones, we are made of dreams and bones
I feel the need to grow my own 'cause the time is close at hand
Grain for grain, sun and rain, I'll find my way in nature's chain
I tune my body and my brain to the music of the land
Inch by inch, row by row, I'm gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below 'til the rain comes tumbling down
So plant your rows straight and long, temper them with prayer and song
Mother earth can keep you strong if you give her love and care
Now an old crow watching hungrily from his perch in yonder tree
In my garden I'm as free as that feathered thief up there
Inch by inch, row by row, I'm gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below 'til the rain comes tumbling
Inch by inch, row by row, someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below 'til the rain comes tumbling down

Baskets that Hold Rain By Jon Fromer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjVBmE3wxEM&t=1s
Planting corn with dances, chanting the refrain
Weaving blankets that tell stories and baskets that hold rain
With sewage running down the streets of Europe, like flies they die from the plague
The olden days of fear and fire, inquisitions and crusades
Hundreds of years before Columbus set sail and got lost along the way
The Anasazi built cities in the cliffs turned deserts to gardens that are growing today
Planting corn with dances, chanting the refrain,
Weaving blankets that tell stories and baskets that hold rain
Broken hearts and broken treaties, promises were just talk
Still today the old ones say in beauty we must walk
Love the land, don’t try to own it, we’re but a branch of an ancient tree
We have tears in the river that longs for the arms of the sea
Ancestors come, keep standing tall, long as the moon and the sun shall rise
It’s been 500 years of resistance, 500 years of fighting to survive
Planting corn with dances, chanting the refrain,
Weaving blankets that tell stories and baskets that hold rain
Katherine Fromer, Jon’s mother passed on to her children her deep affiliations and communion with Native American cullture. She was active in the Alcatraz sit-ins during 1969-1971 and was the sole white woman to serve on the Mexican Council of Native American Women. This capsule of the Native American experience philosophy, and diligence stands as another of Jon’s hidden gems.
Both Sides of the River
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-3b3aVPDvo
The streets are filled with memories, where dreams have been shut down
They watch their children leaving, like the factories in the town
Business finds its fortunes across the Rio Grand
Was a time this Midwest town thought it was the Promised Land
With baskets carrying all they own, and dreams that drive them north
To work the maquiladoras, thousands journeyed forth
For barely a dollar an hour, and poison on their hands
Life just south of the border is so far from the Promised Land
From Midwest towns all boarded up, to Matamoros cardboard shacks
Promises are broken and the dreams are taken back
Both sides of the border, we share the same big sky
Both sides of the river, we are barely getting by
Jon Fromer composed this as the closing theme for a Working Group special on free trade – specifically on how its consequences are anything but “free” to the workers who lose their livelihoods in the U.S. or are forced by economic hardship into sweatshop labor in Mexico (or other corporate –friendly environments)

Anybody here seen my old friend Abraham,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good they die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.
Anybody here seen my old friend John,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.
Anybody here seen my old friend Martin,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone.
Didn't you love the things they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free,
Someday soon it's gonna be one day.
Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby,
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill
With Abraham, Martin and John.

Where Have All the Flowers Gone
By Pete Seeger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS3-lyqCl80
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Girls have picked them every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young girls gone?
Taken husbands every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young men gone?
Gone for soldiers every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Covered with flowers every one
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn?
Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream
Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
The room was filled with men
And the paper they were signing said
They'd never fight again
And when the papers all were signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands and bowed their heads
And grateful prayers were prayed
And the people in the streets below
Were dancing round and round
And guns and swords and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground
Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
What a Wonderful World
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWzrABouyeE
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you
I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world

Paradise
By John Prine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twQB29LNvCk
When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn.
Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away
Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Airdrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill.
Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away
Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.
Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away
When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am.
Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
And they charged all the people
A dollar and a half to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And they put up a parking lot
Hey farmer farmer
Put away that D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot
Lean On Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEXQkrllGbA
Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on for it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on for it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road, I'll share your load
If you just call me
Call me
(Yeah, if you need a friend)
Call me
(You need a helping hand)
Call me
(Call me)
The Times They Are A-Changin’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7qQ6_RV4VQ
Written by: Bob Dylan
Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won’t come again
And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’
It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’
Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin’
And the first one now will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’
There'll Come a Time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naiKpd55f5U
Words and music by Malvina Reynolds;
There'll come a time the smog will be so thick,
We'll all have to walk with a long white walking stick.
But we won't walk anyhow, we'll go by air,
And the helicopters will be so thick we won't get anywhere.
Chorus:
There'll come a time, believe me son,
And when that day is here I will be gone.
Such adulteration will have hit the food,
You'll throw away the contents and eat the carton if you want anything good,
And women will live on synthetic meals,
And they'll all be slender as synthetic eels.
Chorus:
There'll come a time, believe me son,
And when that day is here I will be gone.
There'll come a time the kids will be so smart
They'll be able to recite their own psychoanalysis by heart,
And they'll all be scientists by the time they're ten,
And thank the Lord I won't have any children then.
Chorus:
There'll come a time, believe me son,
And when that day is here I will be gone.
The cities will be so overpopulated
We'll all be buried from the same apartment house where we were created,
And if you take a trip to the country somewhere,
You'll have to be inoculated against fresh air.
Chorus:
There'll come a time, believe me son,
And when that day is here I will be gone.
There'll come a time we'll lose our walking feet,
And food will all be predigested so we won't have to eat,
And children will be made in test-tubes, so we won't have to wed,
And thank God by that time I will be dead.
There'll come a time, won't you be proud,
And by that time I'll be playing an unamplified harp on an eighteenth century cloud.
My Rainbow Race
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxXzD0eQQBg
By Pete Seeger
One blue sky above us
One ocean lapping all our shore
One earth so green and round
Who could ask for more
And because I love you
I'll give it one more try
To show my rainbow race
It's too soon to die.
Some folks want to be like an ostrich,
Bury their heads in the sand.
Some hope that plastic dreams
Can unclench all those greedy hands.
Some hope to take the easy way:
Poisons, bombs. They think we need 'em.
Don't you know you can't kill all the unbelievers?
There's no shortcut to freedom.
One blue sky above us
One ocean lapping all our shore
One earth so green and round
Who could ask for more
And because I love you
I'll give it one more try
To show my rainbow race
It's too soon to die.
Go tell, go tell all the little children.
Tell all the mothers and fathers too.
Now's our last chance to learn to share
What's been given to me and you.
One blue sky above us
One ocean lapping all our shore
One earth so green and round
Who could ask for more
And because I love you
I'll give it one more try
To show my rainbow race
It's too soon to die.

Let it Be
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Grel0xPrjcE
By Malvina Reynolds
When you walk in the forest, let it be.
There's a flower in the wood, let it be.
There's a flower in the wood, and it's innocent and good,
By the stone where it stands, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,
It's so lovely where it is, let it be.
Tho you want it for your own,
If you take it from its place,
It will not be what it was when you loved it
Where it stood in the wood.
Let it be, let it be,
It's so lovely where it is, let it be.
It's a thoughtful child,
Innocent and wild,
By the stone, by the reed,
Let it bloom, let it seed, let it be.
The People Are Scratching
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyGYXjyrvhY
By Pete Seeger
Come fill up your glasses and set yourselves down.
I'll tell you a story of somebody's town.
It isn't too near and it's not far away.
It's not a place where I'd want to stay.
Now the people are scratching all over the street
Because the rabbits had nothing to eat.
The winter came in with a cold icy blast.
It killed off the flowers and killed off the grass.
The rabbits were starving because of the freeze.
They started eating the bark off the trees.
Now the people are scratching all over the street
Because the rabbits had nothing to eat.
The farmers said, "This sort of thing just won't do.
Our trees will be dead when the rabbits get through.
We'll have to poison the rabbits, it's clear;
Or we'll have no crops to harvest next year.
Now the people are scratching all over the street
Because the rabbits had nothing to eat.
So they brought the poison and spread it around.
And soon dead rabbits began to be found.
Dogs ate the rabbits and the farmers just said,
"We'll poison those rabbits 'til the last dog is dead."
Now the people are scratching all over the street
Because the rabbits had nothing to eat.
Up in the sky there were meat-eating fowls.
The dead rabbits poisoned the hawks and the owls.
Thousands of field mice the hawks used to chase
Were multiplying all over the place.
Now the people are scratching all over the street
Because the rabbits had nothing to eat.
The fields and the meadows were barren and brown.
The mice got hungry and moved into town.
The city folks took the farmer's advise
And all of them started to poison the mice.
Now the people are scratching all over the street
Because the rabbits had nothing to eat.
There were dead mice in all the apartments and flats.
The cats ate the mice and the mice killed the cats.
The smell was awful and I'm glad to say
I wasn't the man hired to haul them away.
Now the people are scratching all over the street
Because the rabbits had nothing to eat.
All through the country and all through the town
There wasn't a dog or cat to be found.
The fleas asked each other, "Where can we stay?"
They've been on the people from then 'til this day.
Now the people are scratching all over the street
Because the rabbits had nothing to eat.
All you small creatures that live in this land
Stay clear of the man with the poisonous hand!
A few bails of hay might keep you alive
But he'll pay more to kill you than let you survive.
Now the people are scratching all over the street
Because the rabbits had nothing to eat.

What Have They Done to the Rain?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DramVG4AL2c
By Malvina Reynolds
Just a little rain falling all around,
The grass lifts its head to the heavenly sound,
Just a little rain, just a little rain,
What have they done to the rain?
Just a little boy standing in the rain,
The gentle rain that falls for years.
And the grass is gone,
The boy disappears,
And rain keeps falling like helpless tears,
And what have they done to the rain?
Just a little breeze out of the sky,
The leaves pat their hands as the breeze blows by,
Just a little breeze with some smoke in its eye,
What have they done to the rain?
Just a little boy standing in the rain,
The gentle rain that falls for years.
And the grass is gone,
The boy disappears,
And rain keeps falling like helpless tears,
And what have they done to the rain?
Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1962 as "Rain Song" then in 1964 as "What Have They Done to the Rain" by Schroder Music Company, renewed 1990. a.k.a. "Rain Song" and "Just a Little Rain." People now think of this as a song about acid rain, but it was originally written as part of a campaign to stop aboveground nuclear testing, which was putting strontium-90 in the air, where it was washed down by the rain, got into the soil and thence to the grass, which was eaten by cows. When children drank the cows’ milk the strontium-90, chemically similar to calcium but radioactive, was deposited in their bones. Mothers saved their children’s baby teeth and sent them in to be tested by scientists who indeed found elevated levels of strontium-90 in their teeth. A year after this song was written, President Kennedy signed the treaty against aboveground testing.
Don't Nobody Knows by Reed Fromer
Need from Reed video or audio of how sung
Don't nobody knows, where the tide is flowin'
Don't nobody knows if it's comin' or it's goin'
But let the snowball keep rolling downhill . . .
Don't nobody knows, but in time, we will
Must've stayed at home the day my teacher said,
"When you can't see the road, you're s'posed to burn ahead"
Now we're veering close . . . to that red-sky morning
Gonna be hard to claim . . . that we had no warning
Don't nobody knows, when the water rises
Don't nobody knows if we're in for more surprises
But let the snowball keep rolling downhill . . .
Don't nobody knows, but sure 'nuff, we will
Time and time again, we hear that old refrain:
"We can't afford to lose, all that we stand to gain"
But the gains keep flowing . . . to the same few hands
Who think they override . . . mother nature's plans
And now we learn, what's about to unfold
From the goods we're sold and the lies we're told
Then the price we pay, for the choice we chose . . .
Don't nobody knows . . . don't nobody knows
There's a bitter wind . . . and an angry rain
There's a river running dry, and the woods in flames
Almost like somebody is trying to remind us,
That this ain't no door . . . we wanna lock behind us
Don't nobody knows, when we're changin' seasons
Don't nobody knows when we're gonna know the reasons
But let the snowball keep rolling downhill . . .
Don't nobody knows, but we damn sure will
Jacki Fromer, Reed’s mom, asked Reed why he used the grammatically familiar phrase for the title and chorus. He said ‘because it grabs attention of the listener”.
Shine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW6cXVzRnuo&feature=youtu.be&t=
Written by Sawyer Garrity and Andrea Peña
You, you ??? you tore down the walls and opened up all the gates
You, you ruined this town, you burned all of the bridges and you slowly let us drown.
Chorus
But you’re not gonna to knock us down, we’ll get back up again,
You may have hurt us but I promise we are stronger and
We’re not gonna let you win, we’re putting up a fight
You may have brought the dark but together we will shine a light
And whoa we will be something special
Whoa we’re gonna to shine…. shine
We’re, we’re gonna to stand tall
Gonna to raise up our voices so we never ever fall
We’re done with all your little games
We’re tired of hearing that we’re too young to ever make a change
Chorus
Cause you’re not gonna to knock us down, we’ll get back up again,
You may have hurt us but I promise we’ll be stronger and
We’re not gonna let you win, we’re putting up a fight
You may have brought the dark but together we will shine a light
We can hug a little tighter, we can love a little more
Love a little harder, we can stand up and roar
If we all come together it will be all right
Stand up to one another and we’ll never give up the fight
Singing Stops and each student says a line
We refuse to be ignored by those who will not listen
There are so many things you can do to become involved
Reach out to your Congressman, mail, call and Tweet
The smallest of words can make the biggest difference
Be the voice for those who don’t have one
Together we have the power to change the world around us
Singing Starts again
Chorus
You’re not gonna to knock us down, we’ll get back up again,
You may have hurt us but I promise we’ll be stronger and
We’re not gonna let you win, we’re putting up a fight
You may have brought the dark but together we will shine a light
You’re not gonna to knock us down, we’ll get back up again,
You may have hurt us but I promise we’ll be stronger and
We’re not gonna let you win, we’re putting up a fight
You may have brought the dark but together we will shine a light
And whoa we will be something special ….whoa
We will shine
The song, titled “Shine,” was written by Sawyer Garrity and Andrea Peña. Teens in Stoneman Douglas High School’s drama club sang, delivering an impassioned performance of an original song that was written following the shooting at their school that killed 17 people.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ9drv78dCQ
Come gather round people wherever you roam
And admit that our country don’t feel like our home
And that silence speaks louder than those who condone
If a tweet to you is worth favin’
Then lift up your voices and put down your phones
For the times they are a-changin’
Come women and men who hashtag MeToo
And believe me when I say that we believe you
For weak is the man who calls truth “fake news”
Time’s up, our silence we’re breaking
And even though Mel Gibson was in “Daddy’s Home 2”
Well, the times they are a-changin’
Come athletes with platforms throughout the land
Who by taking a knee are taking a stand
And before you shout out that they should be banned
Listen to what they are saying
Perhaps they’d stand up if you reached out your hand
Well, the times they are a-changin’
Come journalists, writers who report the facts
And brandish your pen to fend off his attacks
Look past what he says and look at how he acts
The fire and fury is raging
For his words can hurt, but your words can fight back
New York Times, they aren’t a-failin’
Come leaders who bully like internet trolls
We’ll curse you with four-letter words “love” and “hope”
For we will go high even when you go low
The order is rearranging
For you have the power, but we have the vote
The times they are a-changin’
America Once Beautiful
Words by Dart Cherk
Sung to the tune of “America the Beautiful “by Katherine Lee Bates 1822, music by Samuel Ward. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAmydqJmDtY
America once beautiful made all her people proud.
Clean water, air, a home, good food, hard work, we felt secure.
Equality, all shades, beliefs, brought possibilities.
Kids, elders occupied their towns, made strong community.
What the World Needs Now
Jackie DeShannon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c2g9RYriZ4
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No not just for some but for everyone.
Lord, we don't need another mountain,
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross,
Enough to last till the end of time.
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.
Lord, we don't need another meadow
There are cornfields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen, lord, if you want to know.
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.
No, not just for some, oh, but just for everyone.

We Are The World Michael Jackson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9BNoNFKCBI
There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somehow will soon make a change
We are all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know
Love is all we need
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
Send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Let us realize that a change can only come
When we stand together as one
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

[Intro]
Feel (the spirit) the spirit (the spirit) moving (Feel it, feel it)
Feel (the spirit) the spirit (the spirit) moving (I want to feel the spirit, yeah)
Feel (the spirit) the spirit (the spirit) moving (I can feel it deep down in my soul)
Feel (the spirit) the spirit (the spirit) moving
[Chorus]
Every time I (Every time)
Feel the Spirit (I feel it)
Moving in my heart (When it's moving)
I will pray (Said I'll pray)
Yes, every time I (Every, every time)
Feel the Spirit (Feel it, feel it, feel it)
Moving in my heart (When it's moving)
I will pray (When it's moving I will pray)
[Chorus]
Every time I (Every time I)
Feel the Spirit (I feel the Spirit)
Moving in my heart (Can't you feel it, can't you feel it)
I will pray (Can't you feel the Spirit moving)
Yes, every time I (Yeah)
Feel the Spirit (Whoa, yeah)
Moving in my heart (Oo)
I will pray
[Verse 1]
Upon the mountain my Lord spoke (my Lord spoke)
Out of his mouth came fire and smoke (came fire and smoke)
When I looked all around me everything looked so fine
I asked my Lord if all was mine
[Chorus]
[Verse 2]
Oh every time, oh every time
It makes me want to pray
If you want to shout it, pray
Oh yeah, hey
Jordan's River, chilly and cold
Chills the body but not the soul
There isn't but one train upon this track
That runs to heaven and it runs right back
[Bridge]
When my heart is open, I feel the Spirit
Oh yes, oh yes, indeed
He lives in my heart, oh yes, He does
Yeah, every time I feel it
I will pray
[Chorus 2]
Feel the spirit (Every time I can feel it)
Feel the spirit (Down in my soul)
Feel the spirit (Oo, I've been there)
Feel the spirit (Feel the Spirit)
I can feel Him moving
[Chorus 2]
Feel the spirit (Sure, I feel it)
Feel the spirit (Sure, I feel it)
Feel the spirit (Spirit in me)
Feel the spirit (Spirit in me)
I can feel Him moving
[Oureo]
Moving in my soul[x3]
Every time I feel Him moving
Feel the Spirit (Can you feel it)
Feel the Spirit (Can you feel it)
Feel the Spirit (Oo, I feel it)
Feel the Spirit (Yes, I feel it)
Feel the Spirit
